Ellen Louise Axson Wilson
Ellen Louise Axson Wilson was born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1860. She was the daughter of a Presbyterian minister and a devout Christian. Ellen was a bright and ambitious young woman who attended Martha Washington College in Abingdon, Virginia. After graduating, she taught school for several years before marrying Woodrow Wilson in 1885.
Ellen was a devoted wife and mother. She was also a strong supporter of her husband's political career. When Woodrow was elected President in 1912, Ellen became the First Lady of the United States. She was a gracious and charming hostess, and she quickly became a popular figure in Washington, D.C.
Unfortunately, Ellen's health was not good. She suffered from Bright's disease, a kidney ailment, and she died in the White House in 1914. Woodrow was devastated by her death, and he never fully recovered from the loss of his beloved wife.
Edith Bolling Galt Wilson
Edith Bolling Galt Wilson was born in Wytheville, Virginia, in 1872. She was the daughter of a wealthy tobacco planter and a devout Episcopalian. Edith was a beautiful and intelligent young woman who attended Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut. After graduating, she married Norman Galt, a Washington, D.C., jeweler. The couple had two daughters.
Norman died in 1908, and Edith was left a widow with two young children. In 1915, she met Woodrow Wilson, who was still grieving the loss of his first wife. The two fell in love and were married in 1915. Edith became the First Lady of the United States in 1917.
Edith was a strong and independent woman. She was also a skilled politician and diplomat. She played a significant role in her husband's presidency, and she was a valuable asset to the United States during World War I.
Woodrow Wilson suffered a stroke in 1919, and Edith became the de facto President of the United States. She ran the country for several months, and she played a key role in the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles.
Woodrow Wilson died in 1924, and Edith retired to private life. She wrote several books about her experiences as First Lady, and she remained active in public affairs until her death in 1961.
Woodrow Wilson: First Ladies of Modern First Ladies is a fascinating and insightful look at the lives of two remarkable women. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the White House and the role of First Ladies in American history.
