At the Limits of the Secular: A Journey into the Questions That Haunt Us
In his latest book, At the Limits of the Secular, Charles Taylor delves into the nature of reality, the meaning of life, and the role of faith in a secular age. Weaving together philosophy, science, and personal narrative, Taylor argues that the secular worldview is incomplete and that we need to find new ways to talk about the spiritual dimension of human experience.

Taylor begins by exploring the origins of the secular worldview. He argues that the Enlightenment's emphasis on reason and science led to a decline in belief in the supernatural. However, Taylor argues that the secular worldview is not simply a rejection of religion, but a new way of understanding the world.
The secular worldview is based on the idea that the universe is self-contained and that there is no need for a divine creator. However, Taylor argues that this view of the world is incomplete. He points out that the universe is full of mystery and that science cannot explain everything. For example, science cannot explain why there is something rather than nothing. Science can also not explain the nature of consciousness or the human capacity for love and compassion.
Taylor argues that the secular worldview needs to be supplemented by a spiritual worldview. He suggests that we need to find new ways to talk about the spiritual dimension of human experience. He proposes that we use the term "immanent transcendence" to describe the way that the spiritual is present in the world. Immanent transcendence is not a separate realm, but a way of seeing the world. It is a way of seeing the world that is full of wonder, mystery, and meaning.
Taylor concludes by arguing that the secular worldview is not the end of religion. He suggests that we are entering a new era of religion, an era in which we will find new ways to talk about the spiritual dimension of human experience.
